Paisley’s latest centenarian enjoyed a garden party in the sunshine as her loved ones joined her to mark the milestone birthday.

Jean Fleming, who is a resident at Mosswood Care Home, was treated to a special garden party with fellow residents and carers at the home for her birthday on Sunday.

The Paisley woman, who has lived in the town for her whole life, was over the moon with the thoughtful celebration, which included a specially made birthday cake and a card from the Queen.

Piper Samuel Ross, 18, who is the grandson of another resident, surprised music lover Jean with a performance and she even enjoyed a sing- a- long with staff to her favourite song ‘I belong to Glasgow’.

Jean’s niece Fiona Bryce said it was heartwarming to see her aunt enjoying the celebrations.

She told the Express: “It was amazing to see her singing away to the song. It was always her favourite and it was so heartwarming to see her so animated and enjoying herself.

“It was lovely to be able to visit her out in the garden and celebrate her birthday with her.

“She had a wonderful day and we can’t thank the staff enough for all the effort they put in to make the day special for her.”

Jean was born on May 30, 1921 to parents Margaret and Frances Fleming and grew up in the town’s Green Road alongside her brother Alec.

She worked as a civil servant for many years, with her job taking her all over the country.

A talented pianist, she loves music, with her passion being passed on to Fiona - who now uses Jean’s old music books when she plays.

Fiona has fond memories of playing card games with her aunt and enjoying trips to Largs - which she says was one of her favourite things to do.

She is a much loved great-aunt to Fiona and her sibling’s children.

Fiona added: “She loved to read and we always played cards with her.

“She worked hard but she played just as hard and she loved to go out with friends and go to the dancing.”

Jean lived in the town until six years ago when she came to live at Mosswood, where she has become a much loved resident to the staff.

Activities coordinator Margaret Tolan said everyone at the home thinks Jean is the “loveliest woman ever”.

She said: “We went all out for Jean and it was just a brilliant day.

“She has been with us for six years and she is just the loveliest lady.

“Samuel came along and played for us as a gift and Charlie Gorman provided the entertainment.

“The weather was lovely and it just couldn’t have gone better.

“We are so glad she had such a good day.”
