A bus driver took unwell behind the wheel in Paisley and ploughed into a lamppost – leaving a passenger with a broken arm.

The McGill’s bus careered off the road while travelling along Ferguslie Walk in the town on Wednesday afternoon, only stopping once it hit the streetlight.

A female passenger - who was travelling on the bus around 3.30pm - was thrown forward as the vehicle collided with the lamppost, resulting in her breaking her arm.

Police and emergency services raced to the scene and shut off the busy road while medics worked to free the unwell driver who was trapped in the driver’s cab of the vehicle.

The road remained closed for 45 minutes as officers remained on the scene and paramedics ensured no one else was injured.

Both the driver and the female passenger were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where they were treated for their injuries.

Police confirmed no other passengers were injured in the collision.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers were called to Ferguslie Walk in Paisley following reports of a road traffic collision at 3.30pm on June 2.

“Upon arriving at the scene, officers became aware that the driver of the bus had become unwell while in operation of the vehicle and had collided with a lamppost on Ferguslie Walk, Paisley.

“A female passenger was injured during the collision and she was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment alongside the driver of the bus.”

McGill’s has been contacted for comment.

Meanwhile, police in Paisley are still working to trace a thug who verbally abused and assaulted another McGill’s bus driver.

The thug lost the plot at the driver of the McGill’s bus, launching a tirade of abuse before lashing out while travelling from Braehead shopping centre to Paisley at the weekend.

McGill’s Buses, which operates a number of services in the town, condemned the attack on the driver.

A spokesman for the company said: “This is a reprehensible incident. Our staff should be able to undertake their duties without suffering verbal or physical abuse and we are working closely with police to offer any assistance we can to identify the perpetrator.”
