Anchor Bowling Club reopens to celebrate 125th year
Members of Anchor Bowling Club had an extra special reason to celebrate their club’s opening day this year.
The Paisley club is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year with a line up of friendly matches and memorabilia for members.
Anchor Mill Bowling Club began in 1896 when a group of Anchor Mill workers approached their managers to ask about the possibility of the company providing them with a bowling green.
The idea obviously appealed to the Clark family who agreed to make available a suitable piece of land adjacent to the mill and on Saturday, July 18 1896, the first opening day of Anchor Bowling Club took place.
In 1979 Anchor Bowling Club broke its ties with the company and the club went private. A new clubhouse was built in 2008.
P r e s i d e nt Tommy Docherty said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be president of Anchor Bowling Club in their anniversary year.
“As we all know recent times have been something that no one in living memory has experienced and would hope that things are changing for the better.
“Our thoughts are with all who have been affected by this pandemic and on behalf of our membership we wish everyone a better and prosperous year ahead.”
The 125th anniversary committee of David Todd, David Healy and Donald McClean thanked local businesses for their generosity and sponsorship.
