Ferguslie fun in the sun

-

This tasty DOG was just theThis tasty DOG was just the job as things got HOT, HOT, HOT at the biggest outdoor community event Renfrewshire has seen in the past 14 months.

The Big Picnic attracted 400 people for some family fun and games.

The day was staged by the hard-working Darkwood Crew who planned and produced it to perfection, even bringing the weather.

Crew boss Terry McTernan said:“They brought their blankets and their camping chairs and had a splendid day out. That is what it was all about.”

With free fun, free sun and free sandwiches, it was always going to attract a big crowd.

And the Ferguslie Park Bank Holiday Picnic did just that.

The event was the biggest to take place since lockdown restrictions allowed in Renfrewshire.

The Darkwood Crew volunteers ran it to perfection, with some combining hi-vis vests with shorts as the sun beamed down on 400 people.

Terry McTernan, secretary of the Darkwood Crew, said he was “super-pleased” awith how the day progressed.

He said: “We were allowed up to 500 outdoors and the limit was 250 indoors.

“What was really interesting was that everybody stayed in their family groupings.

“They brought their blankets and their camping chairs and had a splendid day out.

“Everybody heralds Ferguslie as a shining example of community spirit and this picnic was a real part of the building blocks.

“Big thanks are due to the group of eight volunteers who put it all together and our sponsors Bridge of Weir Leather.”

Children enjoyed free treats and in particular the inflatables which were busy all day.

And all members of the family enjoyed the bingo sessions from the community bus.

The picnic was seen as a watershed moment and was the first and biggest since lockdown shackles were eased.
