Summer’s here but stay safe

-

The summer weather would appear to have returned to coincide with some easing of restrictions in relation to the pandemic.

Unfortunately, this has contributed to an incident that reminds us of the dangers of entering open water unsupervised.

The warm, sunny weather brings with it a temptation, particularly among our young people, to cool off in rivers and waterways.

As calm as the water often looks, you can never underestimate the current, temperature and depth of the water in addition to hidden obstacles that you cannot see.

Please consider your own personal safety and that of your family.

The sun also offers opportunities to thieves who do not have to break in to your home at all because a door or window has been left open or unlocked.

Keep your home securely locked at all times.

Don’t leave keys on the inside of door locks, under mats or anywhere else an intruder may easily find them and don’t keep house keys and car keys on the same key ring.

With the easing of restrictions there will be a temptation to overindulge in alcohol in celebration as life starts to return to normality.

Please remember that alcohol can impact on your behaviour and self-control and can make you more vulnerable to becoming a victim of crime.

Know your limits and be sure to drink plenty of water and eat some food.

Keep your persona l belongings safe at all times and make sure that you and your friends have planned how you will get home.

Also, this week has seen a particularly nasty crime in what appears to be a serious case of animal cruelty.

On Saturday, May 29 a shocked local resident discovered the badly-charred remains of a large tortoise or turtle, approximately 20cm in size, near to a smouldering fire in Durrockstock Park, Paisley.

It is unknown at this time where the tortoise came from so we are keen to identify the owner to ascertain the circumstances.

It is possible that the animal was already dead when it was set alight but at this moment in time we are treating the incident as a crime.

If you are the owner or have any information in relation to this incident can you please contact Police Scotland by calling 101 or, if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting incident number SP-20210529-4207.
