HALF OF ADULTS IN THEIR 30S JABBED

Huge progress made in Renfrewshire’s covid vaccine rollout

- EDEL KENEALY

Half of people in their 30s have been jabbed against Covid- 19 as Renfrewshire marks another milestone.

New figures on the vaccine rollout show that 52 per cent of people in this age group have now had their first dose.

NHS vaccinators have been working around the clock this week as the Delta variant, which originated in India, continues to drive a surge in cases in the area.

On one day alone, 650 people queued at Paisley’s Lagoon to receive a first or second dose of the vaccine.

Their efforts mean that three quarters of the adult population in Renfrewshire now has some level of protection against the virus.

It comes as the area also records no covid related deaths for a fifth consecutive week.

NHS bosses have thanked people for rolling up their sleeves, but warned more needs to be done to fight the virus.

Half of Renfrewshire residents in their thirties have now had their first dose of the Covid- 19 vaccine.

New data, released by the National Records of Scotland, shows that 52 per cent of all those aged 30 to 39 have had an initial jab.

It means that three quarters of the adult population in Renfrewshire now has some level of protection against the virus.

The new vaccine information was published yesterday as the area also recorded no covid related deaths for a fifth consecutive week.

It also comes exactly six months after the first vaccine was administered in Scotland.

Dr Linda De Caestecker, director of public health for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “As the largest health board in Scotland, we have the largest population to vaccinate and, while we have now surpassed the one million doses milestone, much work is yet to be done.

“We continue to urge everyone eligible to come forward to get their first and second vaccine.

“This is the single most effective way of stopping the spread of the virus and, coupled with other measures, is crucial to controlling the virus.”

All those aged 30 to 39 should now have received their appointment letter inviting them for the vaccine, which will be scheduled before the end of July.

People aged 18 to 29 will also receive a first dose of the vaccine by this deadline, with a quarter of people in this category having already received a first dose.

They are being offered either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines after concerns were raised about blood clots associated with the Oxford AstraZeneca jab.

The vaccine rollout is gathering pace as health bosses seek to administer two doses as quickly as possible as the Indian variant of the virus continues to drive up cases in the area.

Drop-in clinics to offer second doses to all those aged 40 and over who have waited more than ten weeks since the first jab have been very busy, with the first at The Lagoon seeing over 650 people in one day.

A second was hosted in the Paisley sports complex on Tuesday, while a pop-up centre was launched in Renfrew yesterday where the number of new covid cases has rocketed in recent weeks.

Currently, Renfrewshire has 131 new cases per 100,000 per population.

There were 235 new cases recorded in the week to June 6.

But in a recent covid briefing to councillors, chief executive of Renfrewshire Council Sandra Black said the vaccine is protecting people affected from serious illness.

She said: “The increasing number of people vaccinated is continuing to impact on the number of people that ultimately require hospital or intensive care treatment.

“Data has continued to show low numbers being hospitalised and requiring intensive care with Covid-19 in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area, with seven requiring treatment in intensive care as at June 2.

“These continue to be the most significant indicators of progress in reducing the impact of the virus.”
