WEST IS BEST FOR CYCLING

Bikeability success for pupils

- ALISON RENNIE

Youngsters had fun getting on their bikes and learning useful skills at the same time.

The P6 pupils from West Primary, Paisley, were taking part in the Bikeability level one course.

All 37 who took part passed with flying colours and will go on to complete level two next year when they are in P7.

Teacher Rhona Campbell, who is an official Bikeability trainer alongside her colleagues Michelle Clark and Christine Park, said the kids had a ball learning some new skills.

“This is something we’ve just started this year,” she said.

“The children did some training in the playground and the front area.

“We also used the multiuse games area across the road.

“We taught them basic bike skills, looking after your bike, that sort of thing.

“Level two will be taking them out onto the road. “They all really enjoyed it. “It was a good way to get them outside, having fun and learning new skills.

“We’re very proud to have all 37 pupils who took part pass their level one.”

Bikeability Scotland is the national cycle training programme for school children and is designed to give them the skills and confidence they need to cycle safely on the roads, and to encourage them to carry on cycling into adulthood.
