Clinical Thistle send Port Glasgow packing

GLENIFFER THISTLE ................................................ 4 PORT GLASGOW ...................................................... 2

A clinical brace from star striker Craig Wilson helped Gleniffer enjoy a winning returnto league action against Port Glasgow.

After two weekends of cup competitions Thistle returned to domestic duty and enjoyed the brighter start.

After ten minutes Aidan Higgins broke free from the wide right and slotted past the keeper, only to see his effort rebound off the post.

Gleniffer kept the game flowing but some poor final passes, aligned with some strong Port Glasgow defending, saw the game remain goalless until the 36th minute.

The hosts finally took the lead when Conor Higgins won the ball back and slipped Luke Gormal in behind the defence. He drove into the box before expertly picking out Liam Corr who cut in and smashed home to break the deadlock.

Port Glasgow hit back against the run of play just four minutes later when a free kick caught goalkeeper Dillian Alexander out with pure power.

The Paisley side pressed to go ahead again straight from kick off and just before half-time Wilson slipped Luke Gormal in to slot home from eight yards out.

Into the second half Gleniffer knew they had to kick on and try to kill the game as a contest early.

They managed that when some nice play in midfield released Aidan Higgins, who beat his man and fired home a shot which rebounded to Wilson. He tapped home from the back stick.

It was all Gleniffer in the next 10 minutes with a combination of the bar and the Port Glasgow goalkeeper preventing the score line from growing.

A late counter saw the Paisley side wrap up the game, with Wilson again finishing from close range before Port Glasgow grabbed a late consolation.
