Upcycling experts create packs to help reuse old clothes

- ALISON RENNIE

A Paisley social enterprise has launched a new venture after a successful lockdown project.

ReMode – which promotes sustainable fashion – has developed a range of sewing Make Packs which include everything needed to make your own upcycled garments and accessories at home.

Each pack includes a handpicked selection of second-hand fabrics, a printed pattern and a link to an instructional video.

During lockdown ReMode, which is based on Paisley High Street, couldn’t run its normal inperson sewing workshops so put together the packages to send to customers and volunteers so they could work on projects at home.

They then began to make ‘how to’ films to go with the parcels, making them suitable for complete beginners to those with more experience.

And was such a success they’ve created more of the packs to keep the initiative going, thanks to support from the Scottish Government’s Adapt and Thrive fund.

ReMode’s project manager Jane Dixon said: “We realised that this was an idea we could continue to work with even after the lockdown was over.

“So many people discovered or rediscovered the joys of making things in the last 18 months, and we can offer a sustainable way to do this.

“Making your own clothes from reclaimed fabrics is a just one simple, fun and creative step we can all take to reduce our impact on the planet.

“And the result is a beautiful, unique handmade item!”

With the staggering statistic that it can take 2,700 litres of water to make just one brand new T-shirt, ReMode is on a mission to encourage people to make the most of items they already have in their wardrobe.

ReMode’s Make Packs includes projects for beginners up to experienced people, so whatever your sewing skills, there’s nothing to stop you joining in.

Make Packs are available from ReMode’s website www. remodeyouth.org or can be ordered in store at 43b High Street, Paisley.
