Jak eyes up victory in Perth

- CARLA TALBOT

Saints keeper Jak Alnwick has said the team is “pumped” ahead of St Mirren’s cinch Premiership clash with St Johnstone.

The Buddies are in need of a win to beat their match slump and keep them out of relegation play-off danger.

Stephen Robinson’s men crashed to an eighth defeat in nine in last Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Hibs.

Now they face St Johnstone trying not to have their cushion to the play-off spot cut to two points.

But, despite the Paisley club’s woes, Englishman Alnwick has said the squad are in a “good place” ahead of the match at McDiarmid Park.

Speaking to St Mirren TV, the 28-year-old who joined St Mirren in 2020 - said: “We knew coming into the bottom six and looking at this game it was always going to be, regardless of the result, a big game.

“We knew it was always going to be a tough fixture going up there, no matter what stage of the season.

“The lads are happy. We are in a good place, even though we are in a bad run.

“We are pumped and we are ready to go and we know what it means for the club.

“We are going there to get a win.

“Hopefully, we can get that and the table looks massively different.”

St Mirren’s 0-1 defeat to Hibs last week marked their fifth consecutive defeat, having failed to secure any points since the win against Dundee United on March 9.

The Saints now have four games left to close the gap between them and the threat of a play-off spot - and currently have 36 points.

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson previously said he’s still confident his side can see the job through to the end of the season.

And Alnwick also has faith that he and his teammates could still pick things up again.

He added: “We have had a good couple of weeks. We were unlucky against Hibs and we at least deserved a point out of it.”

The keeper has also praised the travelling Saints support this season and called on them to turn up in their numbers in Perth this weekend.

He said: “The away support this season has been amazing.

“It really pushed us on. That’s why we look at it like out away performance has been better this season. “We really need them behind us tomorrow.”
