Art sale for Ukraine

-

Some incredible artwork from talented Renfrewshire artists is up for auction to support the people of Ukraine.

Paisley Art Institute (PAI) has teamed up with the Glasgow Art Club for the auction this Sunday.

Natasha Raskin Sharp, a presenter on BBC One show Bargain Hunt is hosting the event at Glasgow Art Club and also online.

Anne Hargan, from PAI, said: “I was asked by our honorary vice chair Falconer Houston to try to sell items for the war and then found Natasha from Bargain Hunt was already was thinking the same with the Glasgow Art Club, so we all joined up.

“Don’t miss looking at the catalogue and join in on Sunday to snap up a bargain and make this event a success.”

Several PAI artists, including Falconer, 88, have had artwork included at the auction.

Joe Hargan is the current president of PAI. His painting Quo Vadis is one of those up for auction.

He said:“The title was hard, as the usual humour may be inappropriate but we want it to be uplifting, not heavy.

“As far as we know, the buildings pictured are in Kyiv. It would be interesting to hear from the Ukrainian contacts, who will receive the donation, any comment on their significance.

“We think the centre is Saint Michael’s Monastery, the archangel Michael on the column is in Independence Square and the other figure is the Motherland statue.

“The loveheart token on the table is beside the colours of Kyiv, quietly.

Sniffy offers food representative of Ukraine’s abundant wheat production feeding the world, and the dog is questioning with an eye on the ball.

“Quo vadis is ‘where are you going’ as five million people are forced to ask themselves. The little dog reminds us of the cruel tearing apart of families as some struggle to take pets with them whilst for others, tragically, it wasn’t manageable. We are witnessing the dispora of a sovereign country.”

There is a live view on paintings on Friday, between 11am and 5pm at the Glasgow Art Club, 185 Bath Street. The collection can also be viewed at www. exhibitauctions.co.uk

The auction takes place on Sunday, May 8 at 2pm, which is Mothers’ Day in Ukraine.

All proceeds raised from the auction will go to the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.
