Playparks are priority for returning councillors

- JACK THOMSON, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Councillor Lorraine Cameron has pledged to put safe play areas for children to the forefront after being re-elected in Paisley Southwest.

The returning member, who has been nominated by the SNP group to continue as Renfrewshire’s provost, said it was “wonderful” that her constituents had put their faith in her once again.

However, she is aware there is plenty of work to be done in her ward and emphasised the importance of green spaces for the community and tackling congestion issues in residential areas.

Councillor Cameron won 1,120 first preference votes and returns to the council alongside ward colleague Councillor Stephen Burns, who returned 1,288.

She said: “It is wonderful that the people in my ward have put their faith in me once again.

“I have been a councillor for 23 years now and been through the election process six times – each time is as much an honour as the one before.

“There’s lots to do in the ward. My priority is providing safe places for children to play, a process already begun with the imminent installation of new playparks in Morar Drive and Durrockstock Park.

“Councillor Stephen Burns and I are discussing a proposal for a playpark in the Braehead Road area of Glenburn and we hope to deliver that in the near future.

“Our environment is very important to me. It is essential that we retain green spaces for our community to enjoy and in certain places we could increase the use of them by improving the infrastructure.

“There are also a lot of congestion issues in residential areas due to the number of cars on the road, and the worst of these areas may benefit from one way systems – I will be spending a lot of time on this issue during my term in office.

“There is more than enough to keep me busy and these are only some of the issues that need attention, but I will do my best to give time to all of them.”

Backing at the SNP group’s recent AGM will see Councillor Cameron nominated to continue as provost at Thursday’s full council meeting.

Meanwhile, Councillor Burns spoke of his desire to continue working with local police to tackle antisocial behaviour, following his re-election.

He said: “My focus is to keep a good partnership working with the community police to resolve any antisocial issues.

“I would like to focus on road improvements and improve open space areas, as well as work on council housing improvements within the ward.

“I am very positive about the Team Up to Clean Up initiative and it’s great to see great partnership working with local residents and schools. I enjoy taking part in this.”
