On form Farmer adds Caven Trophy to Match Play title

- GOLF

Impressive Alexander Farmer produced a round of stunning golf to get his hands on the Caven Trophy.

Cochrane Castle Golf Club was the setting for the 2022 Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys Stroke Play Championship as competitive county golf recently got under way.

While the weather stayed dry for the competition the conditions were changeable due to the heavy cloud cover with intermittent sunshine.

The course as always was a test for those taking part, and with the recent spell of dry weather the course was playing well with firm ground and good run available.

The greens were also in good condition, but the scoring on the day mostly did not set the heather on fire apart from the scratch and handicap winners.

This event is played over 18 holes and the handicap limit has increased to allow younger Renfrewshire boys the chance to experience competition at a higher level.

In the Boys Caven Trophy Alexander Farmer, of Kilmacolm Golf Club, was the winner with a gross score of 70, 1-under par. That gave him his second County Championship title, after winning the Boys Match Play Championship in 2021.

Alexander then completed his Sunday golf by playing for the Gent’s Kilmacolm Team against Old Ranfurly Golf Club, winning his match by 4/3.

The lowest net score was won by Ryan Jackson of Elderslie Golf Club, with a net score of 62 off a handicap of 17.

He was playing in the last match of the day with Andrew Quinn, also of Elderslie Golf Club.

The eight scratch qualifiers in the event go forward to the RGU Match Play Championship for the Freedman Trophy, played as always over at Kilmacolm Golf Club.

With Alexander the holder and now the current Boys Champion at

Kilmacolm, he will start as hot favourite.

A Renfrewshire Golf Union spokesperson said:“The courtesy of Cochrane Castle Golf Club, the condition of the course and the hospitality provided, was much appreciated by us and the players.

“The Caven Trophy was sponsored once again by Paisley based family run company Strathand Fire and Security and we thank them for their continued support of the event.”
