Paisley and District veteran bowling champions crowned
Renfrewshire’s best veteran bowlers battled it out on the greens to be crowned Champion of Champions.
The annual Paisley and District event sees each individual club run their own championship, with the winners going forward to the winner-takes-all tournament.
This year the finals took place at Anchor Bowling Club, with Jim Glen of Meikleriggs Bowling Club, who is currently president of Paisley and District Bowling Association, joining as guest on the day.
As is always the case, all the games were hotly contested right up to the last bowl, with the green in perfect order thanks to the greenkeeper at the Anchor.
The day’s event was presided over by our president Andy Donnan of Anchor who presented the various trophies to the deserving winners, while John McGroarty of Hawkhead Bowling Club was the event umpire.
In the singles the winner was Les Dick from Elderslie Wallace Bowling Club, a previous winner of The Roddie Cup, who beat Jim Abraham of Anchor.
The pairs competition was won by Blacklandmill Bowling Club’s Lewis Thomson and Jim Lappin, who took the honours over Bobby Thomson and Jimmy Kay from Wellmeadow Bowling Club.
The triples was won by Victoria Bowling Club’s trio of Raymond Gavin, Brian Cummings and Danny Hughes who just edged it by one shot over the Anchor team of Bill McGregor, Dan Dempsey and Willie Young.
Lastly in the fours the Abercorn team of Alec Gemell, Peter Barness, Jimmy Hill and Alex Ferguson managed to edge out the Elderslie Wallace team of Hugh McFadden, Stewart Kean, Billy Wilson and Alan Moran - also by just one shot.
A Paisley and District spokesperson said: “Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to all the runners up.”
