New chairman for veterans’ charity

Scotland’s largest veteran charity’s new chairman brings a“wealth of experience”after being announced in his new role.

Erskine – who are a charity that care for veterans in Scotland – have announced that Stuart Aitkenhead will be the new chair of the organisati­on having taking the reins from Robin Crawford after five years in the role.

Mr Aitkenhead is well equipped to succeed in the role as he has a wealth of knowledge after having more than 30 years of first-hand experience in facilities and operationa­l management across a wide range of industry sectors such as helping support the Royal Navy when working with Babcock.

The chartered engineer was appointed as a trustee to the Erskine board in 2012 where his vast experience in facilities management has been pivotal to the developmen­t of the charity over the past nine years, before becoming vice-chair of the board in 2017.

Stuart’s connection­s to Erskine run deep as his grandfathe­r was a war veteran after he fought in the the First World War, as well as his father who served his country during the Second WorldWar.

Speaking after being appointed as the new chairman, Stuart went on to say:“It is a great privilege to succeed Robin Crawford as chairman of this exceptiona­l charity. I have seen first-hand the fantastic work carried out by all members of staff and I am honoured to have been appointed to this new role.

“This is a time of significan­t change and challenge in the social care and charity sectors. I’m looking forward to working in partnershi­p with the board, CEO Ian Cumming and all staff and volunteers to meet those challenges, as we work together to shape Erskine’s future.”

The 60-year-old has been backed by the Erskine chief executive, Wing Commander Ian Cumming MBE, to succeed in the role, and he said:“As we bid farewell to our excellent formerchai­rman, Robin Crawford, I am delighted to see Stuart Aitkenhead take up the reins. Stuart brings a wealth of experience and leadership he will doubtless take the opportunit­y to apply his own perspectiv­es to all aspects of what we do.”
