If activities are your Cuppa T then apply to project for funding

- EDEL KENEALY

Organisations that could deliver activities as part of Ferguslie’s Big Cuppa T initiative are being invited to apply for a £1,000 grant.

The project, launched by the Tannahill Centre earlier this year, serves up a cup of tea and a slice of community in a bid to help locals face the winter challenges together.

It offers residents a cup of tea and toast in the morning and soup and roll in the afternoon, alongside a helping of good company in a warm environment.

Now the centre is keen to offer an activity for people to enjoy after their food each day.

In total £5,000 from the centre’s Good Ideas Fund is on offer.

It aims to provide five groups up to £1,000 to cover the costs of delivering an engaging activity at the centre one day a week.

Gordon Larkin, from the Tannahill Centre, is overseeing the grant applications.

He said: “We want to make the experience more enjoyable for people coming in.

“Rather than having people just coming in for tea and toast, we are hoping to have community groups or organisations come in to put activities on that can run concurrently.

“There’s up to £1,000 available for the activities which we hope will encourage more people to come in and to stay longer.

“The application process is completely open, people can apply to deliver any activity, we just ask that it has a wide appeal, that’s accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

The Big Cuppa T runs twice daily, between 9am and 11.30am and then at lunchtime, from midday until 3pm when kids are leaving school.

It aims to create a hub for the community which had been lacking following the closure of the centre cafe last year.

Gordon added: “When we started the centre was quite empty because of the loss of the cafe.

“Now three or four wee groups have started coming, having their tea and toast and chatting or maybe having some soup before picking the kids up from school.

“It’s a hub again for people to be able to come in, meet folk and have a cuppa or some soup.

“It also gives us a chance to have a chat with people in the community to see what’s happening and what they want in their community.”
