Stephen Robinson is relishing his final test of the season as he aims to outsmart Rangers counterpart Micheal Beale.

The St Mirren manager’s welldrilled side have given many opponents headaches throughout the campaign – with the Paisley club toppling top-six rivals Celtic, Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts as they forced their way into the top half of the table.

Rangers are the only team in that class the Saints haven’t sunk, although they did come mighty close in November when James Tavernier’s late penalty rescued a point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Robinson is determined to finish the Buddies historic season on a high by taking down the other side of the Glasgow duo.

And the confident gaffer believes his side learned lessons from their recent 2-2 draw with Celtic that can help him out-think their opponents today in Paisley.

Robinson said: “We’re definitely setting out to beat Rangers. There’s no reason why we can’t.

“We’ve drawn with them already this season and we competed very well at Ibrox as well for 75 minutes.

“We’ll try to take the game to them at times. They’ve changed things up under Mick and they’re very, very difficult to play against. Their system is very difficult to play against.

“Tactically, it’ll be a good battle and I’m looking forward to it myself, to see if we can out-think them.

“I thought when we went to Celtic Park we corrected things where they’ve exposed us before.

“We’ll try to do the same against Rangers, in places where I felt they exposed us at Ibrox in certain areas.

“We want a big crowd. We want to end the season on a high and it would be a real milestone to beat Celtic and Rangers in one season.

“There’s certainly still an incentive still there for us. It’s definitely not a dead rubber for us.”

While Robinson will shuffle the pack slightly this afternoon at the SMiSA Stadium to give fringe players a chance to pick up minutes, he insists the Buddies will be strong as they aim to take down Rangers.

He will also use the opportunity to give some of the club’s academy youngsters valuable experience, with the likes of Fraser Taylor, Kieran Offord and Lewis Jamieson all in line to get on the pitch throughout the final match of the season.

Robinson said: “I’ll look at a couple of things in this game. There are boys that have trained very, very well all season and deserve an opportunity.

“But it won’t be wholesale changes. We’ll put out a strong squad and introduce a couple of the youngsters.”
