Renfrew blast past Maybole to get their title party underway
It was the perfect end to the perfect season for Renfrew as they marked the final day of a record-breaking campaign with an impressive victory against fellow promoted side Maybole Juniors.
‘Frew ran out 4-1 winners on Saturday afternoon in front of the home support at New Western Park who witnessed their side lift the WOSFL Second Division title to add to their Strathclyde Demolition Cup triumph in December.
They had sealed the league the week before with a win against Glasgow University – and they got their hands on silverware at the weekend.
Renfrew’s players had shaken off the hangovers brought about by the boozy celebrations of the previous week to dominate Maybole and ensure fans enjoyed a great send-off for the season, having lost just twice across 30 games.
Maybole’s players generously gave ‘Frew a guard of honour in recognition of their champion performance.
Delighted ‘Frew boss Jimmy Quigley said: “It was a good victory for us against a good Maybole side.
“I know they are missing a few players but I thought we dominated the game and scored some really good goals and I was really pleased with the result.
“The three teams that were challenging us for the title, none of them managed to beat us.
“We beat Craigmark home and away, we beat Maybole home and away, and we managed to beat Ashfield at theirs and draw with them at home.
“So, out of the three sides that were most likely to challenge us for the title, we managed to take most of the points off of them so that was really pleasing.”

Following Saturday’s game, the players were presented with the Second Division trophy.
Quigley added: “To win any trophy is great but to do the double, which has never been done in the history of the club, was really pleasing.
“I was home by 1am, that’s about my limit, but the boys were still going into Sunday, I think.
“I put a message into the chat yesterday but none of the boys have responded to it yet so I think they’ll be hiding in their beds just now!”
Quigley had a message of thanks for the fans who have supported the club throughout the year.
He said: “Thank you everybody for your support; they came out in great numbers last Friday night to watch us and some guys have been there with us every step of the way.
“I hope they really enjoyed the season because the guys did as well and we appreciate all their backing.”
