Fixed speed camera plan for danger road

- JACK THOMSON, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

A fixed speed camera will be installed on a road in Paisley where a man was killed after being struck by a car more than a year ago.

The permanent enforcement equipment will be introduced on Foxbar’s Brediland Road – near to the junction with Inverkar Drive.

No firm timescales have been set out for the planned work, but the decision has been described as a “welcome step” by an elected member.

Councillor Stephen Burns, who represents Paisley Southwest, said: “A fixed speed camera has been needed to address the safety concerns that have been raised in the area of Brediland Road for some time.

“There are two primary schools not far from this road, Brediland and St Paul’s, as well as Gleniffer High School – so it’s important that measures are taken to ensure drivers are sticking to the speed limit.

“A lot of high school pupils and local elderly people use the shops on nearby

Lochaline Avenue as well.”

Pedestrian Jim Paterson, 63, died when he was hit by a vehicle on Brediland Road just after midnight on

Sunday, November 27, 2022.

Last June, Police Scotland said a then 26-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal crash.

Safety Cameras Scotland has since told the Express it has received confirmation from the programme office a request for a fixed speed camera on the road has been approved.

The unit, which operates within Police Scotland, could not confirm timescales for the work but added the aim was for installation of the camera and any necessary signage to be done in the coming months.

However, this is subject to a number of considerations.

Councillor Burns added: “I look forward to hearing more about the timeline for the works when that becomes available.

“But I hope the camera will be introduced as quickly as possible for the sake of the community.”
