Darth and pals swap the dark side for clean cars in fab fundraiser

- CALAM PENGILLY

The Empire struck back against those dastardly dirty vehicles in Renfrew as they were washed for charity.

Even Darth Vader picked up a sponge to clean mucky motors as part of local firefighters’ efforts to raise cash for a good cause.

Renfrew fire station held its charity car wash event on Saturday, March 2, with members of the public getting the opportunity to have their vehicles cleaned by Vader, storm troopers and firefighters with their fire-fighting equipment.

The generous team at the Paisley Road station gave up their time to support the Fire Fighters Charity, which helps serving and retired fire and rescue service personnel, their dependents and other eligible members of the UK fire services community, throughout their lives.

They raised £2,506.46 across five hours, scrubbing down motors in the midday sun.

Lyndsay Campbell, the charity’s fundraiser for Scotland said: “Huge thanks to the crew at Renfrew for organising a car wash on Saturday, which raised an incredible £2,506.46 for The Fire Fighters

Charity.

“The funds raised will help us to continue to support our fire family by providing them with health and wellbeing support throughout their lives.

“We cannot thank the crew and local community enough for all of their support.

“Special thanks also go to the 5th Legion and Glasgow Airport Falck crew for their help on the day.

“Car washes like these are held throughout the UK, helping to raise vital funds for all serving and retired members of the UK’s fire services community.”

Station Commander Stuart

Murdoch helped organise the car wash.

The crew at the station were joined by colleagues from Glasgow Airport Fire and Rescue Service, which is operated by Falck, and also in attendance were the SFRS Heritage Trust who brought some vintage fire appliances.

The 5th Legion – a Star Wars costuming group dedicated to helping and raising funds for charitable causes – supported the event.

A spokesperson from the group said: “A fantastic afternoon was had by everyone at Renfrew Fire Station assisting the firefighters at their annual car wash fundraising event. More than £2,500 was raised.

“Lord Vader sent out communications thanking everyone involved before he left on his Imperial Shuttle back to the Death Star.”

The Fire Fighters Charity relies almost entirely on donations to fund its vital work, none of the support it offers individuals in the fire services community would be possible without the generosity of its supporters.
