Martial arts club’s medal haul
A new Taekwon-do club in Renfrewshire made their mark at a national championship event recently.
Phoenix Taekwon-do (TKD) Renfrew, a rising force in the martial arts community, showcased outstanding talent and determination at the Closed Scottish Championships held in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.
It was their inaugural appearance at a national-level event – but the club’s athletes delivered commendable performances, leaving a lasting impression on spectators and competitors alike.
Among the stand-out performers was Lucas Wood, whose exceptional skills earned him the bronze medal in patterns, demonstrating precision and artistry in his technique.
Lucas’s younger brother, Theo Wood, displayed remarkable potential in his debut at the championships, narrowly missing out on a medal but leaving a lasting impression with his impressive performance.
Elena Poulos, competing in her very first competition, astounded the audience with her prowess, clinching the silver medal in patterns and adding another bronze in sparring to her impressive haul.
Elena’s determination and adaptability were evident throughout her matches, solidifying her as a promising talent within the club.
Not to be outdone, Kev Wyllie, a seasoned instructor at Phoenix TKD Renfrew, defied age stereotypes by securing the silver medal in individual sparring at the age of 53.
His remarkable feat was followed by another bronze medal in team sparring, further highlighting his skill and tenacity in the ring.
Master Scott McMillan,
Phoenix TKD founder and senior instructor, said: “This success at the Closed Scottish Championships marks a significant milestone for Phoenix Taekwon-do Renfrew.
“We are immensely proud of our athletes’ achievements and grateful for the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious event.
“This success is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and support of our coaches, members, and the entire Phoenix Taekwon-do Renfrew community.”
