Thug jailed for bottle attack on pal at station

- EMYLIE HOWIE

A young thug who repeatedly struck his pal over the head with a glass bottle at a Paisley train station has been jailed.

Bryan Moorhead had been out with a group of friends on August 5 last year when they got on a ScotRail service at Glasgow Central.

During the journey, the 29-yearold attempted to “defuse” an argument between his pal and his girlfriend when things backfired on him.

Cameron Weir pushed Moorhead which resulted in him seeing red and hitting him over the head repeatedly with a glass beer bottle at Paisley Gilmour Street.

Procurator fiscal depute Flora Napier told Paisley Sheriff Court that Moorhead was with a group of friends at Glasgow Central when a disagreement started between Mr Weir and his girlfriend.

Ms Napier explained: “The group got on the 9.30pm service to Ayr from Glasgow Central.

“The train was relatively busy due to it being a Saturday evening.

“During the journey, Mr Weir repeatedly tried to walk to where his girlfriend was sitting but was asked to leave.

“As the train approached Paisley Gilmour Street, the accused accompanies Weir along the carriageway away from the female to try calm the situation.

“At this time, Weir attempted to push past the accused and Moorhead was annoyed at this and pushed Weir back.

“Weir stepped towards the accused to move past him at which point Moorhead began to repeatedly strike Weir to his face and head with a glass bottle.

“Shortly after, the accused got off the train at Paisley Gilmour Street.

“He put the bottle in the station bin but then returned and removed the bottle, taking it with him.

“At this time, ScotRail’s travel safe team were made aware of the assault on Weir and contacted the British Transport Police.

“Police attended at Johnstone and took Weir’s details.

“Weir refused medical treatment and was allowed to leave.

“On Thursday, October 26, the accused attended at Helen Street police office and at 9.15pm he was arrested, cautioned and charged and released on an undertaking to appear at the this court in November.”

Defence agent Umar Hussain told the court Moorhead was “attempting to defuse the situation” when things got out of hand.

Mr Hussain added: “Mr Weir and his girlfriend had a disagreement but they were all allowed to board the train.

“Mr Moorhead actually takes Weir down a number of carriages away from his girlfriend.

“There was a number of ScotRail staff on the train at this time also trying to keep Weir away from the female.

“The CCTV shows Weir pushes Mr Moorhead and he unfortunately reacts in the way he did.”

Sheriff Smith sentenced Moorhead, described as a prisoner of Barlinnie, to four months in jail reduced from six to reflect the timing of his plea.

Moorhead’s sentence was backdated to his date of remand of December 6, 2023.
