‘Lie blow chance to get vital points

- COLIN PATERSON

Arthurlie blew a golden chance to boost their survival hopes on Wednesday night after squandering a two-goal lead at Darvel.

Colin Reilly’s troops were on course for a precious three points at Recreation Park as they held a 2-0 advantage at the interval.

However, the East Ayrshire men rallied in the second half and grabbed a share of the spoils to keep their own title bid alive.

‘Lie are third-bottom of the West of Scotland League Premier Division table – three points behind Kirkintilloch Rob Roy and safety. Both teams have now played the same number of games.

Of the sides in the bottom five, Glenafton Athletic will now be feeling they have a real shot at survival as they have two games in hand on ‘Lie, Kirky and Troon – and three over basement boys Irvine Meadow.

‘Lie go to Loch Park to face Glens next Tuesday night in a crunch clash.

At Darvel, Tam McGaughey and Dylan Dykes were on target to put the Barrhead outfit in the driving seat.

However, it was a different story in the second period.

Former Auchinleck Talbot ace Graham Wilson reduced the deficit before David Syme struck to break ‘Lie hearts and earn ‘Vale a point.

St Mirren Women will have a chance to reset and push on now that the final game of their presplit season has been played, says boss Kate Cooper.

The League One team now has two weeks off before the next stage in the season begins.

It will give them time to get over Sunday’s 6-1 loss against Falkirk at home at Mossedge Village – a scoreline which Cooper says is not reflective of the performance her side put in.

Falkirk managed three in the opening 45 minutes before adding three more in the second half, during which Saints managed a consolation.

They had chances to bag a few more goals of their own but Cooper admitted they weren’t clinical enough in their finishing.

Big wins against the league’s bottom-placed sides aside, Saints have struggled for goals this season.

Their tally for the season is 46, but 32 of those goals came in their four games against Giffnock and Dundee West.

Those games aside, the club has an average of one goal per game across the season.

Speaking to Express Sport, Cooper said:“I felt we competed really well in the game. I think it was a case of them being more clinical with their finishing.

We had lots of chances and we put them under pressure and were very physical. It was a good game for the neutrals. Both teams tried to play football.

“We’re carrying a couple of injuries, and our strikers aren’t on full form just
