Fun as Speakers Club springs into action
President Mary Phillips welcomed members of the Renfrew District Speakers Club to its Annual General Meeting recently.
Members were reminded that the National Conference of the Association of Speakers Clubs is to be held in Glasgow from Thursday, April 18.
Several members from the group will attend, it was confirmed.
Following the AGM, the group conducted its meeting as usual.
The theme for short speeches was ‘spring’. Among the speeches, the following thoughts were expressed: snowdrops remind us that spring is on the way; the spring equinox on March 20 was a lovely, sunny day.
Members also heard that spring is when we spring into action after the winter temptation to stay in and keep warm; we don’t need to snuggle back under the covers after peeping from half-closed eyes.
There is not really any more time but it feels like there is more; daffodils are in bloom and they work their cheerful magic in woods and gardens and along the roadside.
“And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils,” wroteWordsworth.
The group learned of a local project to knit and crochet flowers and the pleasure of taking part in a cooperative production.
Around 2,000 of the flowers will be displayed over Easter outside
Elderslie Kirk. The group also discussed the freezing cold winter into spring of 1947.
“Now, in March 2024, lighter days and nights lighten the spirits,”said president Mary, as she closed another successful meeting.
The gathering was the last of this session, with the group hoping to resume fortnightly club meetings in September in Holy Trinity and St Barnabas church halls, Paisley.
