Robbo hails character as top-six finish in Saints’own hands

- COLIN PATERSON

Stephen Robinson insists St Mirren remain in total control of their top-six fate after showing“character”at Motherwell.

A 1-1 draw at Fir Park on Saturday means the Buddies will secure back-to-back top-half finishes with one win from their final two games against Hearts and

Celtic.

While disappointed with the nature of the Steelmen’s equaliser, the manager was proud of the response following the

5-2 defeat at Kilmarnock and was quick to remind everyone of Saints’status.

Robbo said:“We have to remember we’re St Mirren. We don’t just turn up and win comfortably — that’s not how it happens in this league.

“The fact that we’re in the running for top-six football two years in a row after such a long absence tells you that we’re heading in the right direction.

“I was pleased with our players’ resilience. We all learned lessons — myself included — from that second half at Kilmarnock.

“It was important to bounce back from the Killie result and show anyone who questioned our character.

“It was there in abundance.

“The only downside was the goal we conceded. It was five v two in our favour in the box and we were in total control but we didn’t deal with that.

“We should have won but you can’t do that if you don’t take your chances.”

The gaffer added:“We’re in total control of the top six. I’ll remind everybody that if I’d said that at the start of the season, you’d have snapped the hand off.

“We have to give this group of players a lot of credit and it’s up to us to go and finish the job and get the point[s] we need.”
