Newlands demands compo guarantee for women
An SNP MP has challenged both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer to deliver a cast-iron guarantee that they will fully compensate more than
6,000 WASPI women in Paisley and Renfrewshire North.
Gavin Newlands has warned that a failure to do so would be a“betrayal to the women in Scotland who have been so badly let down Westminster”.
Following the publication of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report, both the Conservatives and Labour have come under pressure to outline how they will respond.
Around 3.6 million women across the UK are estimated to be out of pocket with the report stating that changes to the state pension age were made too quickly and without appropriate communication.
An estimated 6,160 have been impacted in Paisley and Renfrewshire North alone with over 342,000 affected across Scotland.
Mr Newlands has demanded action from Prime Minister Sunak but also wants the opposition to say how they will respond if they win the next General Election.
He said:“Sunak and Sir Keir must finally give a cast-iron guarantee to the WASPI women in Renfrewshire that they will be fully compensated for this huge Westminster scandal.
“For too long, the over 6,000 women in my constituency have been silenced – but no longer.
“The report from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman could not have been clearer: the WASPI women were failed, and they were failed by Westminster.
“So, whether it’s Sunak or Sir Keir that enters No 10 after the next General Election, both political leaders must now commit to fully compensating the millions of women who have been let down by the system.
“A failure to do so would be a betrayal to the women in Scotland who have been so badly let down Westminster.
“They have suffered for long enough. It is time for action.”
