Investigation into Gauze Street collision
A man who died following a horrific crash in Paisley was named yesterday as George Johnston.
The 88-year-old was riding a mobility scooter in the town centre around 8pm on Monday night when he was involved in a collision with two cars.
Police were called to the scene on Gauze Street, at its junction with Silk Street, following the crash involving a red Volkswagen Golf, a red Vauxhall Astra and George’s mobility scooter.
The pensioner was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but he tragically died a short time later, it was confirmed.
There were no reports of any other injuries and the road was closed for around seven hours to allow collision investigation work to be carried out by police officers.
An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, told Wednesday’s Express: “I’ve never seen so many police cars in one street.
“It’s truly tragic.”
People have paid tribute to George and sent messages of condolence and support to his family.
Officers are still appealing to members of the public for information as they attempt to piece together exactly what happened.
Motorists who were in the area at the time and have dash-cam footage have been urged to get in touch.
Sergeant Robert Mackie said: “Our thoughts remain with George’s family and friends at this difficult time.
“Enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact us. We also ask anyone with dash-cam footage of the area at the time to come forward.”
Anyone with information is asked to make contact with Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 3252 of Monday, 1 April, 2024.
