NHS volunteer is honoured for her dedication Marie is recognised for her ‘generosity’

- CALAM PENGILLY

An“unfailingly generous”NHS volunteer in Paisley has been recognised for the dedication she has shown to her role.

Marie Phillips, a rehabilitation support volunteer, was named volunteer of the year at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s (NHSGGC) Excellence Awards for the Clyde sector.

Marie, who started volunteering at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley during the Covid-19 pandemic, works with Allied Health Professionals in orthopaedics to support and encourage patients with mobility and recovery exercises.

She also spends time listening and providing companionship to help lift their mood and has been described as an “incredible support at the RAH” who is popular with staff and patients.

In addition to this important role, Marie has also become a valued member of the RAH INSPIRE team.

The awards ceremony – which was held at the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s Lecture Theatre 2 last month – heard that Marie is “unfailingly generous with her time and will offer to help out wherever needed”.

Also during the event, RAH senior charge nurse Angela Thomson, who works on ward 10, was named leader of the year in the Clyde sector.

She was described as having “demonstrated unparalleled leadership skills” particularly during the pandemic and is said to lead by example by demonstrating true commitment to high-quality patient care and undertaking any task “in the interests of patients”.

Angela also went above and beyond by providing special support to a patient to get married while she was rehabilitating from an illness.

The RAH stroke multidisciplinary team received the team of the year award after they worked to implement a thrombolysis service at the hospital and led improvements that speed up patient access to the acute stroke unit.

The thrombolysis pathway means hyper-acute treatment can be provided at RAH rather than patients having to be transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow – and the improvements present the RAH as a stroke service which delivers to modern standards.

The awards were presented by Melanie McColgan, NHSGGC director for the Clyde sector, who said: “We are immensely proud of all of the staff and volunteers who work across our sites.

“Our annual sector awards are an opportunity to recognise the incredible dedication shown to patients and their families, as well as colleagues.

“We hope the event goes some way to demonstrating how much we value the positive contribution they make.”
