Broken bottle thug remanded in custody

-

A thug who repeatedly struck a man with a broken bottle has been remanded in custody for background reports after being slammed by a sheriff for“not taking matters seriously”.

Ian Leonard appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court for sentencing after admitting in February to assaulting

David Downs and threatening police officers.

Sheriff Gillian Craig deferred sentence for the preparation of background reports but, at the calling of the case, the report wasn’t available and Leonard was to blame.

The 33-year admitted he assaulted Mr Downs on December 8, 2020, at a flat in Paisley’s Stock Street.

Leonard repeatedly struck Downs to the body with a broken bottle causing him “severe injury”and permanent disfigurement.

On the same date, Leonard also caused “fear or alarm”in Paisley’s Espedair Street by shouting, swearing and threatening police officers with violence.

The thug was subject to a court order made at Glasgow Sheriff Court just two weeks prior at the time of the offences.

Leonard, now of Fastnet Street in

Glasgow, claimed the reason he failed to meet with social workers to prepare the court’s report was because he had been attacked and was kept in hospital overnight.

Sheriff Gillian Craig wasn’t impressed by Leonard’s lack of compliance stating: “We’ve been here before.

“It seems to be you’re not taking this seriously so I’ll defer for reports but I’ll remand you in custody for those.”

Leonard waved to a family member in the public gallery as he was led to the cells and will now return to court for sentencing on May 16.
