Homes proposal for neglected buildings

- JACK THOMSON, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Plans to transform a “neglected space” in Paisley into three “highquality” mews homes have been unveiled by architects.

Proposals have been put forward for the conversion of storage and office units behind a shop in Wellmeadow Street into residential properties.

If given the seal of approval, the small development would consist of three two-bedroom homes that, it’s claimed, would “blend seamlessly” with the existing urban environment.

An application for planning permission has been submitted to Renfrewshire Council by SKC Architecture on behalf of a company called WiCare.

A design and access statement said: “The development aims to breathe new life into the existing site while enhancing the character of the surrounding area.

“The site, located at 31 Wellmeadow Street, Paisley, currently comprises of a vacant commercial unit on the ground floor, behind which there is a partially dilapidated storage unit on the ground floor and offices above.

“The proposed development seeks to transform this neglected space into three high-quality, two-bedroom, mews homes that blend seamlessly with the existing urban fabric.”

The architects said the design will “respect the heritage and character of the surrounding area” and incorporate elements to complement the streetscape.

They explained the scale and proportion of the proposed homes have been “carefully considered” to make sure they harmonise with neighbouring properties while providing modern living spaces.

The statement added: “The ground floor accommodates an open plan living room with kitchen and dining area, storage space within the living space and a toilet downstairs.

“On the first floor we have two double bedrooms and a family bathroom.

“High-quality, traditional and durable materials such as brick and slate will be used to create a cohesive aesthetic that reflects the local vernacular.

“The building is currently built from red brickwork, and we have suggested to change this to buff colour to reflect the buff sandstone in the tenement flats and the new homes on Walker Lane.

“Each mews home has been designed to maximise natural light while maintaining privacy for residents.

“Thoughtful placement of windows and ensure a comfortable living environment.”

A decision will be made on the application at a later date.
