Free-scoring Johnstone Burgh hit nine goals in two games to bolster their promotion bid.

Fired up Burgh gave caretaker gaffers Tommy Montgomery and Ross Wilson a boost with a 3-2 win over League One rivals Ashfield Juniors.

The crucial win followed a 6-1 defeat of Cambuslang Rangers earlier in the week.

Burgh striker Conner McGlinchey signed from Beith Juniors in February - set the ball rolling for Burgh as he nabbed the opener. Alastair Small added a second on 76 minutes and Ross McKenzie wrapped it up for Burgh in the 79th minute.

At least that’s how it looked with just over ten minutes to play.

Ashfield were still to have their say, however, and scored two before injury time to leave Burgh sweating going into the final minutes.

They would hold on for the win that sees them move to within two points of Ashfield who currently occupy seventh place.

After a big summer spend though, Burgh have their sights set on the top of the table, and with a considerab­le number of games in hand on their rivals, they could still climb to some height and potentiall­y work their way into a promotion place.

Speaking to club media Montgomery, said: “Very pleased with the result, it was great to go 3-0 up. I thought we got a wee bit naive towards the end.

“We’ve got to learn to manage those situations. We tried forcing a pass, tried turns, we just invited them back into the game which was disappoint­ing because we’re going into some big games and we need to see games out.
