“I know what my budget is,”he added. “We’ve made lots of contact with people and there have been precontrac­ts agreed that people have pulled out of because more money was thrown their way.

“The reality is pre-contracts aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

“The only thing that might change the budget, for the better, would be getting into Europe.

“The club can’t really go above what they’ve given me. We’re in and around the same sort of figures all the time. We’re well versed in what players we need and can get in for the money that we have available.”
