Next talk for group will hit sweet spot

-

East Renfrewshire’s u3a’s next meeting is to feature an interesting talk about the manufacture of confectionery in Lanarkshire – and non-members are welcome to come along.

The event will take place at St Andrew’s Church Community Hall in Barrhead at 1.50pm on Wednesday, April 17 and is entitled“Scotland’s Sweet Spot”.

The talk, delivered by David McDonald, will be followed by tea and coffee.

It will be the latest in a series of monthly meetings hosted by the organisation, which started in Barrhead in 2008 and now has a membership of 600.

Keen to attract new members, Marbe McNeill, the u3a’s chair, explained more about the group.

She said:“Our monthly meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month at 2pm.

“They alternate between St Andrew’s Church Community Hall in Barrhead and Broom Parish Church Hall in Newton

Mearns.

“Monthly meetings are an opportunity to find out more about the u3a which is an international movement aimed at keeping active in your Third Age - when no longer working or involved in child-care.”

As well as monthly meetings, there are more than 70 interest groups covering a wide range of hobbies and opportunities to socialise.

The groups include several walking groups, reading groups and language groups, as well as groups that go on outings to theatre, cinema and to places of interest.

Any member can start a group of their own choice and support to do this is given.

“Our annual subscription is £24 – a mere £2 a month for the opportunity to make new friends and start new hobbies,”added Marbe.
