Fires will injure
Ferguslie community make urgent plea to knock down derelict homes to stop recent wave of wilful blazes
Outraged residents in Ferguslie say “it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed” as yet another fire ravaged the derelict houses in Tannahill.
The house in Tannahill Terrace was set alight shortly before midnight on Monday.
It is the latest in a long line of fires which have been set within the abandoned estate in the past year.
Firefighters worked throughout the night to douse the flames that could be seen spitting from the roof of the property in the Ferguslie Park area of town.
The Express understands the fire also spread to a nearby property.
One eyewitness said: “I saw the building well alight and there was heavy smoke drifting across the area.
“It started off with lots of smoke and then it blew up in flames. The roof collapsed and the fire spread to the next house.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.23pm on Monday, April 15, to reports of a derelict property fire at Tannahill Terrace.
“Operations Control immediately mobilised two appliances and a high reach to the scene and firefighters extinguished the fire affecting the roof and first floor of a twostorey tenement building.
“There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene at 5.36am on Tuesday, April 16, after ensuring the area was made safe.”
The Express previously reported three fire engines were sent out to deal with a blaze on April 5 at a derelict building around 12.30am.
The flames took almost three hours to extinguish but there were no injuries. Police Scotland confirmed it was treating the fire as deliberate.
