Minister drops into Paisley

UK Government Minister for Scotland John Lamont visited Paisley and the wider Renfrewshi­re area to lean more about business, innovation and the next generation of workers.

John Lamont spent time at the University of the West of Scotland, National Constructi­on College in Renfrew and Terumo Aortic in Inchinnan during his visit to the area last week.

Minister Lamont met with students from the Paisley-based university to hear more about their experience­s studying, as well as those attending the National Constructi­on College’s site in Renfrew.

And at Terumo Aortic – a global medical device company dedicated to developing solutions for aortic and peripheral vascular disease, Minister Lamont met with the senior leadership team and received a tour of the offices.

He also learned more about the materials used for their products and the hand-sewing process.

Mr Lamont told the Express:“Paisley and its surrounds have a long history of innovation and industry, and it is fascinatin­g to see how the challenges of the modern era are being met.

“The University of the West of Scotland is equipping students with qualificat­ions that will set them up for tremendous careers, and I was very struck by the number of students who are the first in their family to attend university.

“That sort of outreach is so important.

“Skilled tradesmen - as every householde­r knows are in huge demand. At the National Constructi­on College, a new generation industry-ready youngsters are raring to go and to get Britain building.

“Terumo Aortic are hand-stitching lifesaving medical implants. It’s incredibly intricate work with clear links to Renfrewshi­re’s excellence in textiles. The firm’s ambitious expansion plans underscore how important the life sciences sector is for Scotland.”
