Glenvale want to go up as winners of the league

-

Lewis McKim insists Glenvale are going for the title after winning promotion from the West of Scotland League Fourth Division.

The Paisley side officially went up following a 4-2 win over Royal Albert at Tileworks Park in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, at the weekend.

It was Glenvale’s 21st win in 25 league games – and they are seven points clear of Thorn Athletic and Rossvale who are joint-second.

Goals from James McLaughlin, Noah Young, Ross Stevenson and Sean Daly saw off Albert to get the party started.

And gaffer McKim, pictured, was full of praise for his hard-working squad who have been consistent throughout the campaign.

He told Express Sport:“The team has been excellent right from the start.

“It’s good to get it done and everybody was right up for it on Saturday.

“We have had a full squad every week. We have been up against teams who have been in good places with a lot of history.

“To go from where we were last year to promotion is brilliant.”

McKim added:“We have been treating it one game at a time but we now want to go up as the winners of the league.

“I’ve been at Glenvale for 14 years as a player and this is my first year as a manager – I’m delighted.”

Staying in the Fourth Division and Thorn maintained their own push for promotion with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Campbeltown Pupils at Kintyre Park.

Lewis Steele opened the scoring for the Johnstone outfit but the home side managed to grab an equaliser.

However, Thorn were too strong and restored their advantage through Nathan McLelland.

Cammy Armstrong and Aaron O’Hare then combined in a move which resulted in a Pupils defender turning the ball into his own net.

Big Joe Rae converted from a corner to wrap up the points.

St Peter’s were idle after their match at Newmains United was called off.

In the First Division, Neilston’s hopes of avoiding relegation suffered another blow after a 3-0 defeat at home to Rutherglen Glencairn.

Sean McGuire opened the scoring with Austin Sime’s double seeing off the Farmer’s Boys at Brig O’Lea.

Neilston are rock-bottom of the table and nine points adrift of safety although they do still have a game in hand on Maybole who sit just outside the drop zone.
