Lidl seeks to open more stores
Budget retailer Lidl has confirmed it is looking at the potential of opening three new stores in Renfrewshire.
The supermarket giant – which already has outlets in Johnstone and Paisley – says it wants to bolster its presence in the area, citing Renfrew, Paisley South and Paisley West as “desirable locations”.
The areas are amongst 67 localities in Scotland in which the company says its supermarkets would be successful.
The ambitious plan was revealed as Lidl marks its 30th year in business and an ever growing share of the UK food market.
Richard Taylor, Lidl GB chief development officer, said:“With an exceptional store network and our laser focus on operational excellence, we’re welcoming more customers through our doors than ever before, which positions us perfectly for continued expansion.
“We’re planning to open hundreds of new Lidl stores but ultimately see no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential.
“This is why we’re continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion.
“As we look ahead, we’re excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we’re planning to open across the country in the coming months and years.”
The discounter is specifically looking for sites in prominent locations with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow, with 1.5+ acres for a standalone store and up to four acres for mixed-use schemes.
It is looking at edge of town centre sites as well as possible leasing options in retail parks.
It is hoped some of the identified locations will help the supermarket reach its current ambition of having 1,100 sites across the UK.
