Tennis courts looking ace after £300k refurb

- JACK THOMSON, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Major works to transform previously rundown tennis courts in Johnstone are nearing completion – progress which has been welcomed by an ecstatic elected member.

The facility at Park Road is one of three – including Brodie Park in Paisley and Robertson Park in Renfrew – to benefit from a significant investment in the sport in Renfrewshire.

A combined figure in excess of £300,000 was set aside for renovation works at the courts as part of a venture from the LTA Tennis Foundation and UK Government, delivered by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Councillor Andy Steel, an SNP representative for Johnstone South and Elderslie, recently visited the courts in Park Road and shared his delight about the progress.

Prior to the refurbishment, elected members had concerns about the general appearance of that area. However, they are pleased it has since been given a new lease of life.

Councillor Steel said: “The contractors had to wait for the weather to improve before they could begin the final stages of work, which was pretty frustrating – it felt like spring was never coming.

“However, the sun’s out, it’s much warmer and the courts are getting nearer to being opened again. I hope this will be a popular facility in the town, it’s central to everyone in Johnstone so you don’t really even need to jump in your car to get there.

“You’re always hoping to see someone take up Andy Murray’s mantle starting off local in a park like this. But even if it’s just auld beardies like myself who play there, wildly whacking tennis balls in every direction but where I’m aiming, it’s still great to see improvements in the town.”

As part of the overall project, £129,960 was earmarked for Park Road, £18,090 for Brodie Park and £155,500 for Robertson Park.

When contacted about the works, a council spokesperson said: “Work is progressing on the tennis court upgrades, with courts expected to open in early summer.”
