Swinney to stand as First Minister of Scotland
John Swinney MSP looks set to stand unopposed to be the next First Minister of Scotland.
The SNP politician confirmed that he would run for the top job in a news conference in Edinburgh yesterday morning.
It followed Humza Yousaf’s public resignation on Monday.
The experienced former leader of the SNP offered an olive branch in the form of a role in government to supposed leadership rival Kate Forbes who was expected to enter the race to become First Minister.
Mr Swinney said: “I want to build on the work of the SNP government to create a modern, diverse, dynamic Scotland that will ensure opportunity for all of her citizens.
“I want to unite the SNP and unite Scotland for independence.”
The 60-year-old, who served as Nicola Sturgeon’s deputy for almost nine years, said he wanted Ms Forbes to play a “significant part” in his government if he is successful in his leadership bid in an attempt to sway her to his side and thus make the leadership election a coronation rather than a competition.
“She is an intelligent, creative, thoughtful person who has much to contribute to our national life,” Mr Swinney said. “And if elected, I will make sure Kate is able to make that contribution.”
Ms Forbes, the former finance secretary, later announced that she would not run in the leadership contest – seemingly accepting Swinney’s offer.
If there is only one candidate, they will automatically win the leadership.
Party officials have confirmed nominations will close on Monday with any contest ending on May 27.
