Patricia Murphy introduces the first in a regular series of updates from the Academy of Independent Parchment Craft Tutors.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to write a column about the Academy in Parchment Craft magazine. With each issue we can let you know what is happening on the traditional parchment scene.

The Academy of Independent Parchment Tutors (AIPT) provides a three-level exam system. This is in order to enable student tutors to qualify and teach, first at a basic level and then through demonstrating their skills, progress at their own pace to a higher level. Applicants receive seven up-to-date modern designs at each level with instructions and coloured examples. They have the freedom to use any make of tools and other materials. Support is offered from area co-ordinators who have themselves completed the courses and most of them hold additional qualifications. There are no time limits set and everything is sent to the applicants via email. The courses are completed in their own home. We also invite you to a private Facebook group for student tutors where there are demonstration videos on every technique required and additional free designs to try.

We also have a new standalone course in which several experienced tutors have been involved in producing. It’s called ‘Friend of the Academy’ and is a course for those who do not wish to become tutors but are keen to hone their skills. Again, designs, instructions and coloured examples are provided for guidance. On successful completion a certificate of achievement and a Friend of the AIPT badge are awarded together with admission to the exclusive tutors Facebook group which offers even more in the way of designs and lesson plans.

Since we have been in lockdown and tier restrictions our members have received newsletters each month together with ‘lockdown challenges’ of free designs from well-known designers both from the UK and abroad. We have a great team working together to offer the best we can in these uncertain times.
