Parchment Craft

THE STORK IS ON ITS WAY

With a combination of embossing, perforating and colouring with inks you can create this design to celebrate a new little one arriving in the world.

- Designed by Tracey Aldred

Trace

• Trace the body, wings and border with white pencil.

• Trace the beak with orange ink, then paint the feet in yellow ink.

• On spare parchment trace out the 30

feathers in white pencil.

• On spare parchment, trace the bag in red ink and the baby and hair in sepia ink.

• Trace the dummy in yellow and green ink.

• Trace the label (if using) in white pencil again on spare parchment.

Colour

• On the back of your feather, using the pink and blue ink pads and soft brush, colour them in half and half for a mixture.

• Paint the bag using red ink and a paintbrush with a round and round technique.

• Paint the beak with orange again using the round and round technique.

• Colour the baby’s face on the back using light flesh and tiny round movements.

Blend

• Blend the colour with dorso oil until smooth.

Colour

• Colour the stork on the front using tiny flicks down the body with fuchsia.

• Colour the legs in orange glaze and the feet with cadmium yellow.

Emboss

• Emboss the outline of the stork with your no.1 ball tool.

• Emboss the bag, the baby’s face, the stork’s body, beak and legs with a large ball tool.

• Emboss a line up the centre of the feathers and cut out with scissors.

• On the back of each feather, emboss an angled line away from you using a stylus (from centre to outside edge)

Cut

• Hold the feather in your hand, with one side of the feather pointing towards you. Take your scissors and working furthest away from you, start to cut from the outside edge as far as you can to the centre in one cut. Move the scissors towards you ever so slightly and cut again, keep doing this as close together as you can – you will see that the edges curl slightly. To do the other side just turn your feather over and do the same again.

Do this to all 30 feathers.

Perforate

• Semi-perforate around the border of the design and the label using a five-needle tool.

• Emboss around every other central hole with the ball tool.

• Fully perforate with the five-needle tool.

• Put your needles back in half way and give little twist back and forth.

• Perforate the bag and baby with the twoneedle tool.

• Perforate in between the beak and the top of the beak, just enough to fit the bag through.

• Cut out all perforations.

To finish

• Glue the feathers into place following the lines on the design. Apply glue at the base of the feather only so they can move.

• Slip the bag through the beak of the stork. Just let it sit freely so you get a shadow.

• Attach the parchment onto card with brads. Attach the label through one of the brads.

• Fix all of this to your main card with doublesided tape.

• Finally add a googly eye to the stork to finish.
