Parchment Craft

THE BRIDESMAID

Following on from the workshop on page 28 in the January/February edition in which I explained how to create a pattern from a photo, I’ve used a photograph of my niece Jane at a family wedding as a basis for this pattern.

- Designed by Judith Maslen

Trace

• With white pencil trace the small circles and lines within the inner border, shown in red on the pattern.

• Use a fine black drawing pen to trace everything else.

Shallow-perforate

• Use the semi-circle tool around the oval border

Emboss

• Turn the parchment to work on the reverse. With a small ball tool or scriber emboss inside the outlines of the butterflies and the flower petals and also the parts of the border shown in red, previously traced with white pencil. Use a medium tool to emboss the star in her hair, the locket and earring, the butterfly bodies and the dots in the flower centres. Use a star tool around the border inside the semi-circle perforations.

Colour

Note: All colours are smoothed out with blending medium.

• Still working on the reverse, use Cinnamon to colour the skin and add shadows with Burnt Ochre. Add very little colour in the cheek with Deep red, plus a small amount of Mauve on the eyelid.

• Use Blue Violet VERY LIGHTLY for the butterfly wings and the flowers and Permanent Green for the leaves.

• Colour the dress with Helio Turquoise then turn the parchment to the front and with the same colour add the shadows in the folds with small strokes. Also add the shadows on the leaves and petals in the same way.

• Use Dark Red to colour the lips.

Hair

Note: This is a much simplified method of creating hair which only uses one pencil and the colour is NOT blended. Because my model was a red-head, I am using Dark Red. The colouring is done on the front of the parchment.

• With your chosen pencil, leaving untouched parchment where there will be ‘shine’ on the hair, colour very lightly. (Step 1)

• With the same pencil work into the areas of shadow. (Step 2)

• Turn the parchment and emboss the untouched areas. (Step 3)

Re-perforate

• Use the semi-circle tool around the border to re-perforate deeply.

Cut

• With parchment scissors snip around the border perforations.

Finish

• Trim light blue pearlised card to measure 13x16cm. Attach the parchment to the card with four brads.

• Mount the blue card onto mauve card measuring 14x17cm.

• Using white card, create a card blank measuring 14.5x17.5cm. Fix the mounted parchment to the front to finish.
