Rift

PC GAMER (UK) - - CONTENTS -

There are a lot of these vast games, it turns out. Rift’s

successes – its polish, large world and involved class system – were designed at a time when we were open to the idea that WoW might be a genre rather than a game. I’m not sure that’s subsequently turned out to be true: there’s really only been one World of Warcraft that’s gone the distance, and it’s World of Warcraft.

There’s still something about Rift’s

earthy take on fantasy that I enjoy, but I can’t help but be reminded of those weird CGI fantasy pastiches that procedural cop shows whip out whenever somebody’s been murdered in a videogame and they can’t say ‘ Warcraft’. Just say ‘ Warcraft’, guys.

A strong line in evil bathrobes.
