There are a lot of these vast games, it turns out. Rift’s

suc­cesses – its pol­ish, large world and in­volved class sys­tem – were de­signed at a time when we were open to the idea that WoW might be a genre rather than a game. I’m not sure that’s sub­se­quently turned out to be true: there’s re­ally only been one World of War­craft that’s gone the dis­tance, and it’s World of War­craft.

There’s still some­thing about Rift’s

earthy take on fan­tasy that I en­joy, but I can’t help but be re­minded of those weird CGI fan­tasy pas­tiches that pro­ce­dural cop shows whip out when­ever some­body’s been mur­dered in a videogame and they can’t say ‘ War­craft’. Just say ‘ War­craft’, guys.
