How we test

-

Although we simplify each PC’s score in this Labs to one overall rating out of five, as part of our testing we give them numeric scores across three categories.

The first is performance: to test this, we begin by running our desktop benchmark suite, which includes image-editing and video-processing tasks, as well as a gruelling multitasking test that involves transcoding an MPEG-4 movie file while playing a 4K video in the foreground. These tests provide a numeric score for each system, representing its performance relative to a Core i5-4670K reference PC. You’ll find each system’s scores for this and our other tests on p93, along with its measured power consumption.

There’s more to performance than processor speed, however. We also test the read and write performance of each system’s SSD; and while gaming probably isn’t a top priority for a PC in this class, we test 3D performance by running Dirt Showdown at 1080p with Ultra detail, recording the average number of frames rendered per second. We combine each system’s results in these three tests – weighting the balance toward desktop performance – to arrive at a score out of five for performance.

Our second category covers features and design. This score partly reflects the overall versatility of each PC: a system with spare expansion slots and connectors in convenient places will score more highly than one without. We also consider the overall ergonomics of the system, and weigh in factors such as size, appearance and noise.

The third rating reflects value for money. Since the systems in this month’s Labs all come in at similar prices, this score partly reflects how each PC’s balance of performance and features stacks up compared to its rivals. One other important factor is also taken into account: the warranty. A decent warranty that lasts for several years and includes carriage and return is a significant benefit, and this will be reflected in our value score.

The final, overall score we produce is a weighted average of our three ratings. It’s also worth noting that our ratings are relative to the group on test this month. Every system here is extremely capable – a low score merely indicates that a PC doesn’t quite match the very high standards set by our award winners.
