WINDOWS 10 TAILOR IT FOR YOU
HOW TO CUSTOMISE WINDOWS FOR WORK, GAMES AND FAMILIES
You can tweak Windows 10’s settings to make it work and look better for gaming, homeworking and family PCs. Barry Collins reveals its secrets
There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all Windows. The operating system is enormously flexible and contains hundreds of different settings that can tailor Windows to your specific use case. In addition to Windows’ own tools, there are third-party apps that can help you make Windows look and behave more appropriately for the job you’re asking of it.
In this feature, we’re going to look at three use cases. First, we’ll examine a PC that’s primarily used for gaming, in which we focus on making sure that nothing takes your attention away from the games, and as little as possible interrupts the action.
Then we deal with arguably the biggest use case of all in the current climate: the PC that’s being used for homeworking. We’ll show you how to keep on top of critical notifications, how to focus on specific tasks when deadlines are pressing and how to keep a clean desktop that still has everything you need to hand.
Finally, we turn our attention to family PCs and how to juggle the needs of both parents and children sharing the same device. We reveal how to set up child accounts that let you curb what kids are installing and when they’re using the PC, whilst also giving them freedom to express their own personality.
Of course, it’s possible that the PCs in your house might be multipurpose – a work PC by day and a gaming PC at evenings and weekends, for example. You can pick and mix elements from these different use cases to tailor your PC precisely to your needs.
