Setting up VoIP at home with Sipgate

Signing up for a Sipgate account

Open a new tab and point your browser at sipgate.co.uk. Click ‘sipgate basic’, followed by ‘Sign up for free now’. Work your way through the registration form, providing the necessary information. As part of the sign-up process, Sipgate will send a link to your inbox. Click it to verify your address, then provide your address details and date of birth, and choose the number you’d like to use with your desk phone or smartphone.

Retrieve your account details

When your account is up and running, log in at sipgate.co.uk.

You’ll be redirected to your account dashboard, where you can top up your call balance and check a log of your incoming and outgoing calls. This is also where you can set up your voicemail and opt in to a calling bundle by clicking the Feature Store button. For the moment, click Phones in the sidebar, then scroll down to SIP Details in the right-hand pane.

Set up your desk phone

Find your desk phone’s IP address in your router’s list of connected devices, then type it into your browser. Log in to the phone admin pages, and head for the line, account or SIP profile settings. You’ll need the SIP-ID, SIP Password and Registrar details from your Sipgate dashboard, the latter of which is the both the primary server host and the outbound proxy server. Apply the settings you’ve entered, and your phone will connect to your account.

Using VoIP on your smartphone

Install Zoiper from Google Play or the iOS App Store ( pcpro.link/330zoiper) and, on the opening screen, tap ‘Providers list’, followed by Next. Tap United Kingdom, followed by ‘Show more’, then scroll down to and tap Sipgate UK. Tap ‘Get configuration’, then type the SIP-ID and SIP Password from your Sipgate dashboard into the Username and Password fields. Tap OK, and when Zoiper asks permission to make and manage phone calls, tap Allow. Also allow it to run in the background when requested.
