The Roku Express might sound like the train you take to see Santa in Lapland, but it’s one of the cheapest 4K streaming devices – and one of the smallest.

Shaped and sized like a mini-harmonica, the Roku stick could easily be tucked away behind a telly or monitor, although you will need to maintain line-of-sight with the smartly designed remote. Roku’s service offers all the premium streaming apps: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and BBC iPlayer, to name but a few.

Performance is snappy, making it the perfect plug-in for “smart” televisions where the built-in apps have either gone sluggish or been abandoned by the TV maker. Just be wary that the supplied HDMI cable is very short and the power lead’s not much longer either, although both are reasonably easy to replace. There’s no Ethernet port, so make sure you have strong Wi-Fi to stream 4K.
