Squash star Collin shines at tourney
PEEBLES squash player Sam Collin shone brightly at the Grange Open 2024.
Held at the Grange Squash Club, the tournament showcased intense matches and unexpected outcomes, captivating spectators and players alike.
Among the notable contenders was Galashiels Squash Club coach and Scotland international John Meehan, who entered the tournament as one of the favourites for the title.
Alongside him were fellow Gala Squash Club members Collin, Del Sharratt and Jerry Cooke.
However, the event did not unfold as expected for Meehan, who faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against Nottingham University prodigy Paul Broadberry. In a closely contested match, Meehan lost 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 5-11, 10-12. Broadberry was defeated by the USA’s Sam Osborne-Wylde in a gripping title showdown.
In the graded tournaments, Collin emerged victorious in the Grade A event. Despite starting as the fourth seed, Collin dominated his group with three consecutive victories, including a remarkable performance against clubmate Sharratt. Collin’s journey culminated in a compelling final against Robert Koenig, of Grange Squash Club, where he clinched the title with a 3-1 victory.
In the Grade B tournament, newcomer Cooke from Lauder made a memorable debut, claiming notable victories over formidable opponents to secure a spot in the final.
Despite an impressive run, Cooke faced Finlay Duncan, of Edin University Squash Club, whose diverse range of shots and strategic play proved too much to handle. Duncan emerged victorious with a 3-1 win.
A Gala Squash Club spokesperson said: “The Grange Open 2024 not only highlighted the skill and talent of its participants but also showcased the unpredictable nature of squash, where determination and strategy play pivotal roles in determining the outcome. As the curtains close on another exciting edition of the tournament, players and fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the sport’s rich and dynamic history.”
