INNERLEITHEN

-

Civic Association

On Saturday, May 18 Innerleithen Civic Association, will be hosting their annual plant sale at the Memorial Hall, Innerleithen – with all the usual quality bedding plants, perfect for planting at this time of year.

This year we will also be holding a coffee morning inside the Hall.

The plant sale will start at 8am, and the coffee morning at 9am.

As well as the plants and coffee morning, there will also be cake and candy stall, books, bric-a-brac, and a raffle

Probus

Members of the Probus Club of Innerleithen, Walkerburn and Traquair enjoyed a visit to the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune on May 7. This internationally important collection is mainly housed within the buildings which were part of the original World War Two airfield and today it contains more than 70 aircraft including what is perhaps the most celebrated airliner of all – the Concorde.

The collection is divided into four hangers which are organised thematically: 1. Conservation, 2. Military Aviation, 3. Civil Aviation, and 4. Concorde. In addition to complete aircraft, there is a wide variety of objects either on display or in storage, ranging from a massive engine belonging to a Boeing 747 Jet, one of the largest civil aircraft ever to have flown, to the uniforms worn by aircrew.

Audio visual displays also help to bring a series of vivid personal experiences to life with a number of informative touch screens with introductions to relevant aspects of history and the individual stories of pilots and passengers. In the main hangers there are also large screens which at intervals throughout the day show

impressive films from the archives.

The Tardis of Dr Who is noted for looking small on the outside but mysteriously large inside. This makes it entirely different to the Concorde, as visitors are often struck by how small it appears internally in comparison to its imposing exterior. It is now more than 20 years since this supersonic plane – which could fly from London to New York in under four hours – was withdrawn from service. It typifies to this day, nonetheless, the interest that can be had from a trip to this expertly curated collection.

Following the Introduction Ceremony, the Standard Bearer’s Reel will be danced outside the Hall (Leithen Road side) accompanied by Innerleithen Pipe Band.
