Getting a taste for it

found to borrow I’ve I’d ridden grown a pair a friend’s out of I Racing my day riding GOT my of ACU at dad’s! my KTM as Donington MY Yamaha leathers licence I needed first RC390 taste on test. over so to Cup the I – of It only winter as practical was the bike, it did was, Bathams a so so very as I had part we had much cold an of idea on maximum before what that to speed expect, is a of MiniGP 70mph. but the bike, The biggest with Yamaha 12in bike wheels I’ve on 17s spent and and time a making I got comfortable more than 100mph on it pretty was quickly, a big adjustment. although I think it will take me a while to use the best of the brakes – the minibikes don’t need good brakes, so they’re not that sharp. The Yamaha might look basic next to Michael’s BMWs in the workshop but they felt sensitive to me. It also took me a while to get used to the size of the track, too – it’s twice as wide (or more) than the tracks I’m used to racing on, so I’ll have to make sure that I use it all and carry the speed. I did start adjusting pretty quickly, though – I was supposed to be taking it easy but I was soon going faster and taking a stab back at people who’d overtaken me earlier... It’s mad to be out there, racing in Michael Rutter’s team with the support of Bathams. It means so much and it’s not the sort of thing I thought would happen to me. It means the difference between racing or not – we just didn’t have the money for a bike and all the entry costs, so I wouldn’t be racing if it wasn’t for them. They’ve been great to be involved with – there’s no pressure on me so far; this year is about learning the tracks and what Michael can teach me ( the section on grid girls might be best left until you’re 18 – CN), then if they still want me for 2019 that will be the year for getting results. Although I’m moving into the class alongside Lewis Jones, who won the MiniGP championship the year before I did, so my first target will be to beat him. And then as many people as possible...

Harris says the brakes will take some getting used to

He’s saddled with the novice bib for 10 separate race days. But hopefully not his dad’s leathers... STORY SO FAR Bathams Racing provide the funds, Rutter provides the wisdom and the team, and backs a local hotshot kid in Brit Supersport 300.
